rasta was here quite a bit longer. He originally posted as cosmiccharlie and until recently was still in the top 50 posters under both names.

When i read his "." post, i thought he was asking for people to throw salt in the wound. I don't think he was looking for a pity party. The problem is i don't think most of us have any idea what the wound was in this case. Usually when some one "leaves" this place in a blaze of glory, its because of something that happened here. This is does not appear to be the case at all. Based on what he wrote, it sounds like he was stood up by some people here or did not feel included in some SF get together and has decided to eliminate the whole lot of us from his life. Not sure why such a public display over a relatively private matter. I guess that is the social media world we now live in.

For the record, BryanE said he was "outta here" and he never came back.

"I guess that is the social media world we now live in"

Perhaps you have a point. I had always thought that such displays were limited to the under 30 crowd, but ".GONE"
may have proven me wrong.

Along those same lines I recently read a Facebook post from a neice that literally said "Sitting in a Taco Bell drive-through, wondering if I want a taco or a burrito". I died a little inside.

I would have died a little inside as well. Who the hell goes to Taco Bell and debates between the taco and the burrito? Go chalupa or go home.

If the Bay Area folks had stuck to TB, maybe this whole mess could've been avoided, eh?

I have a neighbor who does that. I really regretted "friending" her, 'cus she litters my facebook page with "10 am stopped at drugstore" "1 pm going shoe shopping" sheeeesh, who needs to know this?

For the record, please nobody take offense if I don't friend you on facebook. I am trying to avoid it. It seems difficult to completely be rid of it - I keep trying or needing to do things that seem to require that I do it through facebook. (fe, I joined an animal rescue group, and the group communicates entirely through facebook. so facebook now once again sends me a barrage of reminders and blah blah). It's insidious. Complete resistance seems futile, but I am still trying not to pay much attention to facebook. I don't feel much better about linkedin, either - I continually get requests from people I don't know or don't really need to be "linked" to (again, nothing to do with anyone here, a very general thing, just sayin').
ok, sorry for the "I hate social media" rant.

In any event, I didn't really know rastomon, though I had the definite impression I didn't agree with him on a lot of things, but I'm sorry he's gone.

Well, don't worry; FB will be a thing of the past soon. I know that because I just joined it a few months ago. The only reason I finally gave in sounds like yours -- being in a group that mainly communicates through FB. And then I joined LinkedIn cuz someone sent me a request and I thought it would be rude NOT to join. So now I get all these LinkedIn requests, too, and I haven't even made a real LinkedIn page.

Not to take this in a dark direction, but last month I learned that a good friend had just died suddenly and unexpectedly ... and I learned it on FB. It was good I was on it, I guess, for that reason ... but still ... weird weird world, when you learn something that intense by reading it on FB.

They could have just as well name Facebook "The Borg".

Resistance is futile. All shall be assimilated by the Collective.

Seriously, I try not to be resistant to new technology or new media, and maybe it's geezer paranoia, but I really do think facebook is a menace. I'm not convinced google isn't evil anymore, either.

Agreed whole heartedly.

What starts off as a handy information sharing tool can quickly morph into a personal-info-gathering and tracking tool of The Man. I used to love Facebook but have since escaped their clutches. Funny, despite my daughter's warnings my life didn't immediately descend into a dark cavern of despair and loneliness. If you could look into the future 5000 years, I wouldn't be suprised to see that we had lost our vocal chords.

Wait, strike that. Our need to whine will always keep that from happening.

It has definitely morphed that way. The things my computer seems to know about me are scary. It's like it's reading my mind, suggesting who I want to contact, what I want to shop for, what I want to read, what causes I might donate to, who I will vote for, etc., based on patterns in keyboard strokes! Stop already!! It's no longer a tool, it's an extension of our brains and psyches.

I see my smart phone headed this way as well. Though it isn't yet as smart as my computer - why someone thought I wanted to receive texts from "Women4Mitt," I don't know.

If you know how I can get off "RandyMonkeys" distribution list, I (and the local authorities) would be grateful.

LOL. And the thing is once you've friended someone, you can't unfriend them or hurt their feelings, so you're stuck forever getting notices from people who post cute kittens, or specialize in photographing sand or whatever their pet obsession. Nothing against either sand or kittens ... I just have to stay off it or surely I would enrage all my friends and relatives sending unwanted information about Jerry Garcia.

Ha, so it IS possible to resist ...
seriously, I downloaded instructions for "how to get off facebook" forever and I was really going to do it, but if I do, I can't talk to various people I actually need to talk to. Quite a plot!

I, too, have maintained "Facebook Resistance". My children, and 13 year old grandson, continually chide me for my reluctance to join but I look at Facebook the way non-heads look at the Grateful Dead...I just don't get it!

I too have never succumbed to the irresistible force of the facebunch. My life does not feel unfulfilled. In fact, I feel much better off because of it. One less internet-based thing to obsess over. No thanks.
